- It is not possible to mix and match courses from different exchange programmes.
Extension of your semester
Do you wish to extend your semester during your study in Groningen? Your home university will need to send us an extension request by email. Please ask them to mention the exchange programme you wish to follow during the 2nd semester. Once we received this email, we will check the possibilities and inform your home university asap.
Is your extension confirmed? You will need to submit your online application before 1 July for an extension for the autumn semester and before 1 December for an extension for the spring semester.
Please note to make sure that you have found housing during the 2nd semester as this may be difficult to find, especially during the autumn semester.

The application is fully digital and documents do not have to be send by email or postal mail. Make sure you do not miss our application deadline!

We will be sending out Acceptance Letters from the beginning of May when you start in the Autumn Semester and from the middle of October when you start in the Spring Semester.
Immigration procedure
Students with a non-European nationality need a visa/permit to study in The Netherlands. Team Immigration will apply for your visa/permit and will contact you with the immigration procedure once you have received your acceptance letter. Team Immigration will also apply for insurance for you. Please note that you will need to transfer a financial guarantee to the bank account of Hanze UAS in order to proof to the IND (Dutch immigration service) that you have sufficient funds to live on.
Start looking for housing
Exchange students are responsible for securing their own accommodation. However, the International Offce, Team Housing, will provide incoming exchange students with assistance in making accommodation arrangements for the exchange period, provided all application procedures are fulfilled.
Hanze does not own on campus accommodation, but we will reserve some rooms for exchange students with the housing association SSH. Once you have received your Letter of Acceptance you can book a room in one of their international student houses in Groningen. Apply asap as rooms are limited.
As the housing situation can be challenging in Groningen (especially when you start in September/Autumn Semester), we advise you to start looking for a room as soon as possible. For the Autumn Semester we advise you to secure a room before the beginning of June.
For more details check out housing and www.athomeingroningen.com.
We will send you an Arrival email (in July or in December) with more practical information. You can download the Good to Know leaflet and check out Moving to the Netherlands.
There is plenty going on in Groningen! Read more about the city to see what Groningen has to offer or take the virtual campus tours. Students can join ESN Groningen, a student organisation that organises activities throughout the year, or the student sport organisation, ACLO, who offer a wide variety of sport activities. One thing is certain, you will never be bored!
